Trondheim and Sør-Trøndelag offer some of the best education in the country, through a variety of institutions.
NTNU
Best known is NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, which houses 7 faculties, 52 departments, 5,000 employees and approximately 18,500 students.
NTNU offers the highest technological education in Norway, as well as a broad selection of studies in areas like social studies, the humanities, science, medicine, architecture, and the arts. At Medisinteknisk Senter at St Olavs Hospital medicine and technology meet in education, research, and innovation. The environment surrounding NTNU and the research foundation SINTEF continues to help nurture an increasing amount of new technology businesses.
Sør-Trøndelag University College
Sør-Trøndelag University College (HiST) also contributes to making Trondheim the complete student city it is, with its 6 faculties and approximately 700 employees. About 7,000 students attend the university college, which offers studies in areas like health and social care, science, technology, economics, and teaching.
Queen Maud’s College
Norway's only specialised college in the field of early childhood education, Queen Maud’s College, is located in Trondheim. This private college offers a variety of bachelor degrees, and is a national resource centre for early childhood education, as well as being strongly involved in both national and international research on the field.
Upper secondary education
Sør-Trøndelag County Authority owns and runs 22 upper secondary schools which are spread throughout the county. Each school aspires to offer a broad range of studies, thus ensuring a great overall variety in the studies offered.

Primary and lower secondary education

Vocational schools
Ladejarlen and Byåsen upper secondary schools offer vocational education. This is a briefer and more vocationally directed alternative to higher education, allowing for direct entry into the chosen profession upon completing the vocational education.
