Oppdal is the county's most visited winter destination, but Røros's position as a place for tradition, culture, and history makes it an attractive destination too, and has ensured its place on UNESCO’ s World Heritage List.

Travelling and tourism generates great business and many jobs in Sør-Trøndelag. In 2004, the collective turnover was 6,1 billion NOK (TØI 2004), which includes accommodation, food and drink, transportation, museums, travel agencies, and other goods and services purchased by tourists.
The hotel and restaurant sector in Sør-Trøndelag has approximately 3,800 employees, and 1 million overnight stays were registered in the county's hotels in 2004, which makes Sør-Trøndelag the sixth largest county when it comes to overnight stays at the hotels.
